I have watched thousands of on-track videos and combed through just as many data files, and one thing has become crystal clear: The information available for study is practically infinite. Indeed, each lap tells its own story.

Every athlete is at a different place in their skill set, and each driver or rider faces unique, individual barriers to reaching the next step in their progression. The data always points to the answers, if you know where to look for it.

As a coach, I rely on a set of key references, always used in a specific order. Once a driver or rider has mastered the base fundamentals—apexes, slow point of the corner, and motor controls—they’re ready for one of my favorite references: end of braking, the exact point the brakes are released.
