[FUNDAMENTALS] GOT A MINUTE?
Here’s a one-minute drill to improve your vision skills—anytime, anywhere
There is no disputing the value of vision skills in motorsports. But how to actually improve them often feels like a mystery. Do you need to be tested? Where would you go? What would a technician even measure? More importantly, what should you be working on?
I’ve spent nearly two decades in the motorsports-vision world. Last year, I was invited to speak at the International Sports Vision Association conference in San Diego, California. There is a lot going on in that world, and the subject matter can get overwhelming fast.
You don’t have to think of it that way. While an individual evaluation is ultimately the best option, you can sharpen your foundational vision skills with a simple, one-minute drill that targets many of the exact visual and cognitive demands you need to employ on the racetrack.
This quick drill improves:
Focus shifting with orientation
Tracking (smooth pursuit eye movements)
Peripheral awareness
Anticipation and prediction
Depth perception
In the accompanying video, I’ll walk you through the drill, which can be done from pretty much anywhere.
