Merely mentioning the word “trailbraking” in the context of motorsports sparks more confusion and conjecture than nearly any other subject.

“Trailbraking is for experts. It’s an advanced skill.”

“You can’t trailbrake in a Porsche.”

“Trailbraking on a motorcycle requires special tires.”

“What do you mean? I’m already trailbraking.”

Before going any further, I need to make an important point: There are critical differences between trailbraking and simply using the brakes in a corner. They are not the same, and lumping them together—as so frequently happens, especially in instruction circles—is one of the greatest sources of misunderstanding in motorsports training.

Why is this distinction vital to your success on the racetrack?

  • It eliminates any confusion if the brakes should even be used in corners

  • Believing you’re trailbraking when you aren’t. This actually makes you slower
