[Fundamentals] Understanding "Feel" and Building Feel References
Feel is one of the toughest topics in motorsports. It's where confidence is built and serves as a bridge between you and your vehicle. So what exactly is it and how can you develop it?
Picture this: A pro shows up at a track they have little to no experience on, and within two to three laps, they’re already on pace, flirting with the limits of grip and their vehicle’s capabilities. Maybe you’ve had a pro driver or rider hop into/onto your vehicle to set a reference lap, and in just a lap or two, their pace is already quicker than yours.
How do they do it?
The secret lies in using feel references, the finely tuned sensory ability to interpret feedback from the car, bike, or track. These references tell you precisely when you’re approaching or reaching the limit of grip and performance. As you learn to recognize what these limits feel like, you can consistently approach them with confidence and efficiency—in less time. This skill isn’t magic; it’s the result of deliberate practice and a profound understanding of both the technique and the machine.
