I love riding bicycles. I started at an early age and even completed the Davis Double Century at age 12. Later on, as a teenager, I started racing and had local success, eventually ending up on a national podium. Then I took a 30-year break. When I came back to cycling, my immediate goal was to get fit and start racing again, which I did. But after a couple of years, I found that I wasn’t improving, despite riding harder and more often. So, I hired a coach. One of the first things we did was talk about my goals and, like any enthusiast in any sport, I wanted to be good at everything: a great time trialist, fast sprinter and solid climber. His response was classic: “Great, we can do any of those… now pick one.”
